Why Montenegro travel times are longer than Google Maps says

Montenegro is one of the few countries in Europe where mapping apps consistently underestimate road times. The reason is straightforward: the country is almost entirely mountainous, and mountain roads do not reward the speeds that algorithms assume. A well-surfaced but tight hairpin road through a 1,200 m pass imposes 30–50 km/h whether you drive it in a hurry or not.

The Kotor–Žabljak route is the most commonly misquoted journey in Montenegro. Google Maps shows roughly 2 hours. The actual drive via the main route through Nikšić takes 4 hours in good conditions — more in summer when the mountain road through Trsa has slow traffic. There is a faster road via the coastal highway to Podgorica then north, but it adds distance. Either way, budget 4 hours minimum. Do not plan Kotor to Žabljak as a day trip unless you are comfortable with 8 hours of driving in a day and have nothing else on the itinerary.

Kotor to Skadar Lake (Virpazar) takes 1 hour 30 minutes via the Sozina tunnel, which bypasses the old mountain road and shaves significant time. The tunnel has a toll of around 4 €. Without it, add 30–40 minutes. Virpazar is manageable as a day trip from Kotor; plan to arrive by 9–10 am to catch morning light on the water and book a boat in advance in summer.

Kotor to Ostrog Monastery is 2 hours 30 minutes — further than most people expect because the road winds up through the Bjelopavlići plains inland. Ostrog is a powerful and popular pilgrimage site; the monastery parking fills by 9 am in peak season. Consider booking a guided day trip that handles the logistics, especially if you also want to include Skadar Lake or Cetinje in the same day.

Kotor to Dubrovnik is 70 km by road, which sounds like an hour. Allow 2 hours in shoulder season, 3–4 hours in July and August when the Neum border crossing (Bosnia) backs up with traffic. The Pelješac Bridge now offers a Croatia-only crossing that avoids Bosnia, reducing the border waits — but you still clear exit and entry on both sides.

The coast is fast, the mountains are slow. Budva to Bar takes 45 minutes. Podgorica to Kolašin is 80 minutes on the good new road. Žabljak to Tara Canyon (the rafting starting point) is 45 minutes. These are the quick links. Once you leave the main corridors, speeds drop.
