Montenegro currency & tourist tax
Quick-answers on money, tax and tipping — tailored to your stay.
Currency facts
- Montenegro uses the Euro (EUR, €) — despite not being an EU member.
- No currency exchange needed if you're arriving from the Eurozone.
- ATMs are widely available on the coast and in cities.
- Mountain villages and remote areas: bring cash. Card terminals are unreliable or absent.
- Cards (Visa/Mastercard) accepted at most hotels, restaurants and shops on the coast.
- Amex acceptance is limited — don't rely on it.
Tourist tax
- 1 € per adult per night — collected by your accommodation.
- Applies to guests aged 13 and over.
- Some accommodations include it in the listed price; others add it at checkout.
- Always ask upfront if the rate includes tourist tax.
- Applies year-round, in all regions.
Tipping guide
- Restaurants: 10–15% is appreciated but not obligatory. Round up the bill or leave 1–5 € on the table.
- Taxis: Round up to the nearest euro or add 10%.
- Hotel housekeeping: 1–2 € per day, left in cash on the pillow.
- Tour guides: 5–10 € per person for a half-day tour is a good tip.
- Bars: No standard tipping — rounding up is fine.
