Montenegro in October: Golden Autumn, Quiet Coast & the Last Warm Swims

Is October a good time to visit Montenegro?

October is excellent for independent travellers who prefer quiet over buzz. The first half offers 20–24°C weather and a sea still swimmable at 20–22°C. Kotor, Skadar Lake, Lipa Cave, and the Blue Cave tours are all open until end of October. Prices are low, crowds are minimal, and the autumn light on the mountains is remarkable.

October: the quiet golden month

October is Montenegro’s most underrated month. Ninety percent of the summer visitors are gone, but the infrastructure — hotels, tour operators, restaurants — remains open through the end of the month. The landscape is transforming: the mountains take on rust and gold, the Skadar Lake shores are reflected in still, autumnal water, and the low October sun gives the Bay of Kotor a quality of light that summer’s haze entirely removes.

The sea is still warm enough for swimming in the first half of the month — 20–22°C — and on warm October days (which occur frequently in the first half) you can have a Montenegrin beach almost entirely to yourself. The hotels that remain open offer their autumn rates, often 40–50% below August. This is the trade: fewer options (some restaurants and hotels close progressively through October), but dramatically more room to breathe.

Weather in October

Coast (Kotor, Budva, Herceg Novi): Early October feels like a continuation of September — 20–24°C by day, 16–18°C at night, mostly sunny with occasional short rain periods. From mid-October, temperatures ease to 16–21°C and rain becomes more frequent, though not constant. The sea temperature is 20–22°C in early October (still comfortable for swimming) and drops to 18–19°C by late October. The first sustained autumn rain periods can arrive in the second half, particularly in the Bay of Kotor which receives more rainfall than the open coast.

Mountains (Žabljak, Durmitor): October is the prime autumn-foliage month in Durmitor. The beech and birch forests turn brilliant gold and amber from early October. Temperatures in Žabljak range from 2 to 14°C, with overnight frosts possible in late October. High routes (Bobotov Kuk and the main ridges) should be completed by early October — snow can arrive at altitude in late October.

Interior (Biogradska Gora, Kolašin): October is peak autumn colour season in the primeval forest of Biogradska Gora. The ancient beech forest turns gold from early October, and the central lake reflects the colours. Access is straightforward; it is one of the most beautiful drives in Montenegro in this month.

What to do in October

Kotor Old Town and city walls October is arguably the finest month to walk Kotor. The light is extraordinary — low and golden in the morning, casting the limestone walls in amber. The old town is quiet enough to enjoy at any time of day. The city walls climb steeply to the Castle of San Giovanni; allow an hour and a half for the full circuit. On a clear October morning, the view across the bay — still warm, still blue, surrounded by mountains beginning to colour — is among the finest in the Adriatic.

Blue Cave — last chance before the season closes The Blue Cave tour season ends at the end of October. In good October weather, the boat tour is excellent — the sea is still warm enough for the swim stop, groups are tiny, and the iridescent cave light is as spectacular as ever. If you are visiting in October, this is the last window before the November–April closure.

Skadar Lake autumn Skadar Lake in October is beautiful in a quieter, more contemplative way than the spring bird-peak season. The autumn light transforms the lake’s surface. Migratory birds are beginning to arrive for winter. The lakeside vineyards are in harvest. A boat tour from Virpazar in October is one of the most peaceful experiences Montenegro offers, and pairing it with a visit to a winery in the Crmnica area makes an excellent full day.

Lipa Cave — last weeks Lipa Cave closes at the end of October. If Cetinje-area caves are on your itinerary, October is the last chance. October visit conditions are excellent — the cave is always 8°C regardless of season, the tour groups are tiny, and the 2.5 km guided tour through the cave system is as immersive as it gets.

Durmitor autumn hiking Early October is prime time for Durmitor’s autumn transformation. The beech forests around the Black Lake and along the lower plateau trails are brilliant gold by early October. The hiking routes are still clear; the weather is generally settled in early October. High routes (above 2,000 m) should be completed by mid-October as snow can arrive at altitude. The Black Lake circuit is the easy entry point; the Stubica trail and the valley routes give the best autumn colour.

Biogradska Gora primeval forest The ancient beech forest of Biogradska Gora — one of three remaining primeval forests in Europe — is at its annual best in October. The central lake is surrounded by trees in full autumn colour, and the forest has a golden, cathedral-like quality in the October light. The park is a two-hour drive from Kotor via Kolašin. Combine with a night in Kolašin town for the full experience.

Swimming in early October The beaches are not packed in October. With the sea at 20–22°C in the first half of the month, a warm autumn afternoon on a Montenegrin beach — with nobody nearby — is an unexpectedly lovely experience. Jaz Beach near Budva, Sveti Stefan public beach, and the more remote beaches of the Lustica Peninsula are all accessible and quiet.

What to expect: crowds and prices

October is definitively off-peak. From the first week, the change from September is palpable. Accommodation prices are at September levels (already 25–35% below August) or lower. By mid-October, some of the better coastal hotels offer deep-discount rates to fill rooms before seasonal closure.

Restaurant choice narrows progressively through October. In Kotor, the year-round options are strong; in Budva, the selection thins; in smaller Riviera towns, you may find limited options by the final week. Call ahead before planning a specific restaurant visit in late October.

Best base in October

Kotor remains the strongest base for October. Year-round restaurant quality is the best on the coast, the old town is at its most intimate, and the bay is accessible for day trips to Perast, the Blue Cave, and Skadar Lake.

Herceg Novi is a good alternative — the town has a pleasant autumn character and sits at the entrance to the bay with easy access north toward Croatia or south toward Kotor.

Žabljak for a mountain-focused trip — early October peak autumn colours and the last weeks of comfortable high-altitude hiking.

Festivals and events

  • Montenegro Wine Festival (late September/October, Podgorica area): The Plantaže winery and regional wine producers celebrate the harvest. Dates vary; check the tourism board.
  • Olive harvest, Bar region: Bar’s ancient olive groves begin the olive harvest in October — a quiet agricultural event, but interesting to witness if you are travelling in the area.
  • Kotor Art and Film events (October): Some cultural programming continues into October; the Kotor Art association runs events through autumn.

What to pack

  • Layers: 20°C days but 14°C evenings require a proper jacket
  • A waterproof outer layer — October rain is more frequent than September
  • Swimwear if visiting in the first half of the month (sea still 20–22°C)
  • Walking shoes for Kotor city walls and town exploration
  • Hiking boots for Durmitor and Biogradska
  • A warm fleece for Žabljak (2–4°C overnight in late October)
  • Sunscreen — still needed for clear October days
