Tivat vs Kotor: airport convenience vs the best medieval town in Montenegro

Tivat vs Kotor: airport convenience vs the best medieval town in Montenegro

Should I stay in Tivat or Kotor?

Stay in Kotor. It has the UNESCO old town, the fortress walls, the best restaurant variety, and the most day-trip options. Tivat is useful for a first or last night when flying through Tivat airport — the 3 km from airport to Porto Montenegro is genuinely convenient — but as a multi-day base, Kotor offers substantially more.

8 km apart, worlds away in terms of what they offer

Tivat and Kotor are 8 km apart on the inner Bay of Kotor — a 15-minute drive on the coastal road. But they represent almost opposite tourism propositions: Tivat is a modern marina town built around Porto Montenegro’s superyacht infrastructure; Kotor is one of the best-preserved medieval towns on the Adriatic with a UNESCO designation and genuine historical depth.

Most travellers who arrive at Tivat airport are actually heading to Kotor. The question of where to spend your nights deserves an honest answer.

The case for Tivat: airport convenience and the Porto Montenegro experience

Tivat’s primary strength is its airport proximity. Tivat airport is one of the two main international airports serving Montenegro (alongside Podgorica) and receives direct flights from across Europe. Being 3 km from the terminal means you can arrive, check in, and be watching the superyachts with a glass of local wine within 30 minutes of landing.

Porto Montenegro itself is a genuine achievement as a resort. The 630-berth marina accommodates the largest private vessels in the world. The boardwalk has good restaurants, decent shopping, and a nautical museum in the old submarine pens. If you’re on a short break (3–4 days) and want a relaxed luxury experience without needing to explore much, Tivat and Porto Montenegro work.

The case for Kotor: everything else

Kotor’s Old Town is the main reason to come to the Bay of Kotor. Three kilometres of medieval walls, the Cathedral of St Tryphon (consecrated in 1166), the Maritime Museum, and an intricate web of Venetian alleys occupied by real residents, stray cats, and an increasingly good restaurant scene.

From Kotor you can reach Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks in 20 minutes, Budva in 30, Lovćen National Park in 40, Skadar Lake in 60, and Podgorica in 75. It is the best-connected point in the Bay of Kotor for exploring the wider country.

The Old Town’s main inconvenience is parking — drive to the marina, park, and walk through the Sea Gate. This is a genuine operational friction but worth accepting for the quality of the setting.

The compromise: split your stay

A practical approach many travellers use: stay the first night in Tivat (arrive late, airport close, no need to navigate the Old Town with luggage at night), then move to accommodation in or near Kotor for the rest of the trip. On the last night, return to Tivat if you have an early morning flight.

The 15-minute transfer between Tivat and Kotor by taxi costs €15–20.

Profile cards

If you’re on a luxury short break and don’t need historical depth: Tivat/Porto Montenegro. The marina experience is polished and the logistics are simple.

If this is your main Montenegro trip and you want to understand the place: Kotor, without question.

If you arrived by yacht or are chartered: Tivat’s Porto Montenegro is the obvious answer.

If you’re travelling with children and want ease: Tivat offers more space, less traffic in the accommodation areas, and the marina is child-friendly. Kotor’s Old Town is also good with children but logistically trickier.

If you’re flying in and out of Tivat airport: One night in Tivat at each end, Kotor for the middle.
